In the summer of 1979, in Thüringen, in East Germany, two families put together a crazy plan. They are desperate to leave the DDR for the 'West' and plan to flee in a homemade hot air balloon. After sewing and tinkering for weeks, the amateurs make their first attempt. Meters from the West German border, their balloon suffers from the rain and crash lands. Luckily, they manage to avoid being caught by the police. However, the wreckage from their escape attempt is found and that triggers a desperate manhunt. The tension rises as the families determine to try again, and a race against time ensues. On the one hand, the authorities, desperate to track down the traitors, become aware that a second attempt is being planned. On the other, the would-be escapees, conscious of the search drawing ever nearer, need to build a more robust, weatherproof balloon - and avoid leaving too many clues. Based on a true story. 2h 5m. Registration is required.

JOHN LEWIS: GOOD TROUBLE is part chronicle, part tribute to Congress member John Robert Lewis, the legendary civil rights leader-turned-politician. Director Dawn Porter's film follows Lewis' life via both archival footage and contemporary interviews. It ranges from Lewis' early years in Troy, Alabama, to his time as a college student in Nashville, where he helped found the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and emerged as one of the "Big 6" leaders of the civil rights movement. In addition to focusing on Lewis' personal story, the film also follows the trajectory of his public service career and includes several interviews with politicians who've been inspired by him, including the late Elijah Cummings, former president Bill Clinton, Hillary Clinton, Cory Booker, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, Ayanna Pressley, and Rashida Tlaib.

The Pull of the Stars by Emma Donahue
In an Ireland doubly ravaged by war and disease, Nurse Julia Power works at an understaffed hospital in the city center, where expectant mothers who have come down with the terrible new Flu are quarantined together. Into Julia's regimented world step two outsiders -- Doctor Kathleen Lynn, a rumoured Rebel on the run from the police , and a young volunteer helper, Bridie Sweeney.
In the darkness and intensity of this tiny ward, over three days, these women change each other's lives in unexpected ways. They lose patients to this baffling pandemic, but they also shepherd new life into a fearful world. With tireless tenderness and humanity, carers and mothers alike somehow do their impossible work.
