Born and raised in Georgetown Township, Gene spent his early years attending Jenison Christian School through 9th grade before completing his high school education at Jenison Public Schools. He was part of the first graduating class at Jenison Public and later married his high school sweetheart, Sandy Bennett. Together they raised three children: Matthew, Julie, and Paul, all of whom continue to live in and serve the local community. The couple is also blessed with five grandsons and three great-grandchildren, creating a strong, multi-generational family legacy.
Professionally, Gene was a long-time business owner and operator of DeWitts' Auto, a local family business (Jenison Sunoco) he ran with his father and brothers. However, his most notable and enduring contribution to the community came through is 50-year service with the Georgetown Township Fire Department. Rising through the ranks, he retired as Deputy Chief, leaving behind a legacy of dedication, leadership, and service.
Outside of work, Gene has always enjoyed spending time with his family. He fondly recalls childhood memories of camping and fishing, hobbies he passed on to his children. In recent years, he and Sandy have developed a passion for cruising, having embarked on more than 25 trips, with the Caribbean Islands being their favorite destination.
Now in the next chapter of his life, Gene looks forward to serving as the Township Treasurer.
